چکیده

S U M M A R Y Seismic tomography has been one of the primary tools to image the interior of the earth and other elastic structures. To date the inversions of compressional (P) and shear (S) wave speeds have been carried out separately under the assumption that P traveltimes are affected only by the P wave speed of the elastic media and S traveltimes by the S wave speed. Using numerical and analytical solutions, we show that for finite-frequency seismic waves, S wave speed perturbations may have significant effects on P waveforms. This suggests that when waveform-derived traveltime and amplitude anomalies are used in tomographic inversions, the P-wave measurements should be related to not only P wave speed perturbations but also S wave speed perturbations.

Seismic exploration is one of the main geophysical methods to extract quantitative inferences about the Earth’s interior at different scales from the recording of seismic waves near the surface. Main applications are civil engineering for cavity detection and landslide characterization, site effect modelling for seismic hazard, CO2 sequestration and nuclearwaste storage, oil and gas exploration...

Prediction of shear and Compressional Wave Velocities from petrophysical data utilizing genetic algorithms technique: A case study in Hendijan and Abuzar fields located in Persian Gulf

Shear and Compressional Wave Velocities along with other Petrophysical Logs, are considered as upmost important data for Hydrocarbon reservoirs characterization. Shear Wave Velocity (Vs) in Well Logging is commonly measured by some sort of Dipole Logging Tools, which are able to acquire Shear Waves as well as Compressional Waves such as Sonic Scanner, DSI (Dipole Shear Sonic imager) by Schlumbe...

Empirical relation for estimating shear wave velocity from compressional wave velocity of rocks

In situ shear wave velocity is one of the most important parameters for evaluating dynamic elastic moduli and needs special energy sources for generation and receivers for detection. Identification of shear wave phase on a seismic record needs skill as it is not the first wave to arrive and is usually embedded in surface waves. To estimate shear wave velocity for site characterization and for p...

Theory of compressional and transverse wave propagation in consolidated porous media

A theory of compressional and shear wave propagation in consolidated porous media ~rocks! is developed by extending ideas already introduced in connection with unconsolidated marine sediments. The consolidated material is treated as an elastic medium which exhibits a specific form of stress relaxation associated with grain boundaries and microcracks. The stress relaxation, which is linear in th...

A Nunerical Investigation of Head Waves and Leaky Modes in Fluid-filled Boreholes

Although synthetic borehole seismograms routinely can be computed for a wide range of borehole conditions, the physical nature of shear and compressional head waves in fluid-filled boreholes is poorly understood. This paper presents a series of numerical experiments designed to provide insight into the physical mechanisms controlling head wave propagation in boreholes. These calculations demons...
